Norðurál has been producing aluminum and aluminum alloys according to customer needs in a responsible, safe, and competitive manner since 1997. The Company’s operating license is for an annual output of 350,000 metric tons of aluminum.

In 2024, Norðurál produced 308.335 metric tons of aluminum and aluminum alloys, using roughly 25% of all electric power generated in Iceland. The number of employees was approx. 645.

Norðurál's Power Purchases
A power bill for a smelter is significantly more complex than an electricity bill for a household, but it is still possible to provide a fairly clear picture of Norðurál’s electricity purchases for production. Norðurál has long-term contracts with three power producers, totaling 546.5 MW.

Norðurál is one of Iceland’s largest buyer of goods and services, spending over $50,000,000 annually on materials, equipment and specialized services procured from a wide range of local suppliers, from vegetable farmers to engineering firms.
Certified Operations
Norðurál is ASI certified for sustainable and responsible operations. Quality controls are ISO 9001 certified, and environmental and safety protocols are ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified. Norðurál has implemented the Equal Pay Standard ÍST 85:2012 with PwC Gold standard.
