55% reduction of emission and waste by 2030
Norðurál set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, outside the EU Emissions Trading System, by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels. In 2023, the reduction in emissions reached 45%, thus achieving the original target seven years ahead of schedule. We are aiming for even greater success and are now setting the target at a 55% reduction by 2030.
Norðurál's Sustainability Report
The year 2023 was both successful and fruitful for Norðurál. We continued to take important steps towards carbon neutrality, improved operations, and reduced waste by participating in various projects. In this way, we are purposefully heading in the right direction to be a role model in aluminum production.
One of the most researched areas in the country
The surrounding environment of Hvalfjörður is one of the most researched areas in Iceland. Independent parties monitor about 100 measurement parameters over a large area to ensure that the activities in Grundartangi do not have negative effects on the environment.
Click on the monitoring locations for more information about the monitoring of air quality, freshwater and sea, vegetation, and livestock.
Green Accounting
Norðurál maintains a Green Accounting system, which is an accurate record of all materials coming into and going out of the smelter. Our goal is to minimize all material usage as much as possible and to provide a detailed account of what happens to all undesirable substances.
Large and small community projects
Every year, Norðurál supports dozens of large and small community projects. To apply for a community grant from Norðurál, it is best to send an application to the email address styrkur@nordural.is with key information about the project and the estimated funding needs.
Grant committee reviews applications four times a year.
