Gunnar Guðlaugsson manages all Century smelters worldwide

Gunnar Guðlaugsson, Norðurál’s CEO, has been hired to manage Century Aluminum’s smelters in Europe and North America. Gunnar’s new job title is “Executive Vice President, Global Operations” and he will be responsible for the operation of Century Aluminum smelters around the world.

Century Aluminum owns and operates, in addition to Norðurál Grundartangi, three smelters in North America and an anode plant in the Netherlands. The total annual production is over one million tons of aluminum.

Gunnar has worked at Norðurál since 2008. First as the managing director of Norðurál Grundartangi and as the CEO since 2019. He will continue in that role.

Gauti Höskuldsson, who has been the managing director of Norðurál’s rodding and potroom, will also take on a new position at Century Aluminum as “Vice President, Global Operations” and work with Gunnar both in Iceland and N-America. Gauti has worked at Norðurál since 1999 but has been the director of the rodding and potroom since 2009.

Sigrún Helgadóttir has been hired managing director of Norðurál Grundartangi and will oversee the daily operations of the plant. Sigrún has worked at Norðurál since 2012, in recent years as Managing Director of HR and Purchasing. Previously, Sigrún worked i.a. at Kaupthing, at the Oslo Stock Exchange and the Icelandic Stock Exchange.

Birna Björnsdóttir takes over the position of Managing Director of the rodding and potroom. Birna started working at Norðurál in 2005 and has held various positions within the company. In recent years, she has worked as the head of production management.
